Magnus Carlsen vs Hou Yifan – World Chess Champion vs Women’s World Chess Champion

December 7, 2015 - Chess

A classical game played between two current World Chess Champions is extremely rare. This happened however in the 7th round of the 77th Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2015. The current World Chess Champion and world #1 Magnus Carlsen was paired with the current Women’s World Chess Champion and world #70 Hou Yifan. What happens when Carlsen and Hou enter a great positional struggle in the Kalashnikov variation of the Sicilian Defense?

Chessnetwork guy, you are way over my head in chess, but I have a couple of questions: what is your rating? and, when you second guess moves by GMs, how do you (or I) know that they would respond as you anticipate? I realize that there is often a preferred or most logical move next, but there might be an alternative you don't mention, or a series of moves providing a different result many moves later? At times there seem to be assumptions- "If he had done this, this would have happened, then this, etc." Seems to me that if you can make those statements with confidence, YOU should be world chess champion.

There is no "Women's World Chess Champion".
You're either World Chess Champion or you're not.

In 10:45 why not go with Rxh6 (check) ((…gxh6, Qh6 (mate)))…Kg8 Rh8 (Mate)

If Carlsen would have taken that pawn at h6 the game would've ended regardless of how it was played. Wether she took his rook or fled to g8 she would've lost.
