While in NYC for the Play Live Challenge & Chess Works, Magnus did a timed, blind simul in front of thousands of people. There was no order, and Magnus had 1/3 of the time. Watch and see how it all went down.

This game features an absolutely stunning “king hunt”. The opening is a Sicilian Defence. It is arguably one of the greatest “immortal games” seen on a Chessboard. It was played by the young Chinese super-prodigy Wei Yi who was 16 years old at the time of this game. His opponent is the Cuban No.2 GM . FM (2010); IM (2012); GM (2013); Asian U12 Champion (2010); World U12 Champion (2010); Chinese Champion (2015). Born in Jiangsu province (Yancheng County), Wei Yi was the world’s youngest GM when he gained his title. At 13 years 8 months and 23 days (1), he became the fourth youngest GM ever after Sergey Karjakin, Parimarjan Negi and Magnus Carlsen, the latter of whom is his favorite player “because he is so strong!” (2). He is the youngest player to reach 2600 and the youngest to reach 2700.

Wei gained his FM title by winning the World U12 Championship in 2010. He won his IM norms at the Aeroflot Open 2012 B, and at the Asian Continental Chess Championship (2012) (a 20-game norm), becoming an IM a few weeks before his 13th birthday. His GM norms came at the World Junior Championship (2012), the 2nd Indonesia Open Chess Championship (2012) and at the Reykjavik Open (2013).

GM Lazaro Bruzon Batista was born in Cuba and has long been Cuba’s #2 player behind Leinier Dominguez Perez. He began to compete internationally during his teenage years, gaining his Grandmaster title in 1999, 32 days after gaining his IM title. (1) In 2001 he became World Junior Champion and won the Lausanne Young Masters event, ahead of future top-ten players Ruslan Ponomariov, Etienne Bacrot, and Levon Aronian, among others.
